That is simply true. There is no better way to build an opinion and be able to argue your ideas. unfortunately with the arrival of the internet people sometimes think they are right when it is just a fake news. This kind of information, manipulates people's ideas and sometimes confuses some minds. The best thing to do is to check the sources of what you are reading and see if there are other articles or books that talk about the same thing. Reading books recognized by great authors can also help you learn a lot. Learning really helps to be more credible in a discussion, for example.
After that, it all depends on what you "learn". If you find out that your boyfriend or girlfriend is cheating on you, I'm not sure it will help you in a debate.
